摘  要：Following the sharp reforms in the late 1990s, China's state and collective sectors underwent divergent paths: while the state sector restructured and steady expanded, the collective sector rapidly retreated. Employing cross-sectional variations in exposure of these sectors to reform, we find that the collective sector's retreat promotes private businesses entry, but state sector’s restructuring does not. The state sector has shed labor redundancy markedly and the restructured SOEs became larger and full of market power, posing barriers to entry for private entrants. Poorly collectively-owned enterprises (COEs) quickly retreat, providing a developed market and resources for private enterprises. Entrants are more likely to be labor-intensive and exhibit comparable survival rates and employment sizes in the long run. Only a minority of entrepreneurs initiated their businesses due to being laid off, and most are opportunity-driven. These results partially explain the co-existence of state capitalism and the rise of private enterprise in the Chinese economy.

嘉宾介绍：方胜，经济学博士，北京师范大学副教授，硕士生导师，供职于北师大珠海校区人文和社会科学高等研究院，博士毕业于华中科技大学经济学院。研究领域为公司金融、发展经济学。在《经济研究》《经济学（季刊）》《金融研究》、Journal of International Business Studies、World Development、International Review of Economics& Finance等期刊发表学术论文十余篇。主持国家自然科学基金青年项目、教育部人文社会科学研究青年基金项目。曾任世界银行短期顾问、国家自科基金通讯评审专家。
